Thank you volunteering and being a referee, or for thinking about being a referee. Whether you  actively volunteered or were recruited (many of us started this way), refereeing is a great way to get involved in AYSO soccer. And it is FUN… really.

7U/8U

10U

  • 7v7
  • No headers
  • No punts by keeper
  • Build Out Line (see video on this page)
  • All players must play 3 quarters before anyone plays the entire game
  • 25-minute halves
  • Size 4 ball

12U

  • 9v9
  • No headers
  • All players must play 3 quarters before anyone plays the entire game
  • 30-minute halves
  • Size 4 ball

14U

  • 11v11
  • All players must play 3 quarters before anyone plays the entire game
  • 35-minute halves
  • Size 5 ball

The new laws come into force on July 1 each year.
For AYSO, these Laws come into force on Aug 1.

What you need to know re. Build-out Line for 9U and 10U

 As part of their Player Development Initiatives, USSF has introduced the Build-out line (BOL) for 9U and 10U.

Becoming a Referee

We will teach you everything you need to know and give you a cool referee uniform!

Mentoring / Assessment

Region 19  has an ongoing referee mentoring program.
It is intended for new and existing referees who want to improve their refereeing skills along with Intermediate or Advanced Referee Candidates who are working toward their Intermediate or Advanced Certifications.

Referee Classes



Referee certifications are good forever! If you have already taken a referee class and have your Regional Badge, you do not need to take another Regional Class. You are welcome to attend a class if you would like a refresher.

How to sign up for In-Person Referee Classes
- Login to SportsConnect (Region 19 volunteers via the link on ayso.19.com)
- Select your volunteer opportunities
- Click on the "AYSOU" link on your user profile
- Select "Training Event" from the menu on eTrainU on the left side of the page
- Select the search by region and scroll calendar to the desired month
- Select the training event and click the enroll button

Make sure you complete all listed required prerequisites prior to the class.
